FSSAI registration is one of the most important registration required by every person involved in the food business, such as persons who wish to open a restaurant, bakery, hotel, cloud kitchen or food stall in India. Every Food Business Operator (FBO), such as entities or persons involved in manufacturing, preparation, selling, transportation, distribution and storage of food articles/products, are also mandatorily required to have an FSSAI registration to carry on their food business. FSSAI stands for Food Safety and Standards Authority of India. It is an organisation that monitors and governs the entire food business in India. It is an autonomous body that is established under the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India.

The FSSAI has been established under the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006 (FSS Act) which is a consolidating statute related to food safety and regulation in India. It ensures the food products undergo quality checks thereby curtailing the food adulteration and sale of sub-standard products. It is responsible for the registering and licensing of the FBOs in India and it lays down the rules and regulations for running the food business in India.

FSSAI Certificate: FSSAI Licence Types

According to the company’s annual revenue, there are three sorts of FSSAI certificates.

1. Basic FSSAI FoSCos licence- A company that generates less than 12 lakhs in revenue must obtain an FSSAI basic licence. Furthermore, the basic registration must be upgraded to the State licence as soon as the company’s annual revenue exceeds 12 lakhs. As the name suggests, it is a middle-level licence that small enterprises or startups typically choose.

2. State licence from FSSAI FoSCos- A state licence must be obtained by any firm with a revenue of between 12 lakhs and 20 crores. Small and medium-sized firms, merchants, restaurant marketers, storage facilities, wholesalers, etc., also obtain the FSSAI State licence.

3. FSSAI’s Central licence for FoSCos- The company must get an FSSAI Central licence if its annual revenue exceeds 20 crores. Additionally, the same licence must be obtained by importers, manufacturers, Central Government operators, airports, seaports, railroads, etc.

The cost of getting the aforementioned licences might vary based on a number of criteria, but their durations range from one to five years.

5. For applying State License any One of the following certificate is compulsory ( Trade license, Shop and Establishment Registration, Panchayath License, Corporation License , Municipality License )

Required Documents for FSSAI Central License

1. Rental Agreement of Business Premises.

2. ID Proof of the Concerned Person (Aadhaar Card / Driving License / Passport / Voter ID)

3. If any Government Registration Certificates ( Company Incorporation Certificate / Firm Registration / Partnership Deed / Pan card / GST Registration Number / Shop and Establishment Registration / Trade License)

4. If the applicant is private limited company or partnership firm then they should provide MOA & AOA or Partnership deed copy.

5. IE Code (Import Export Code) Certificate. (for the category of export and import IE code is compulsory)

6. Authority letter from the company letterhead to the concerned person stating that he is authorized to file FSSAI application.

7. List of food category desired to be manufactured (In case of manufacturers).

Food Business Operators Who Require FSSAI Registration?

The Food Business Operators (FBOs) carrying on the following kinds of the food business must have FSSAI License/Registration:

1. Petty retailers, Retail Shops, Snacks shops, Confectionery or Bakery shops, etc

2. Temporary stalls, fixed stalls, or food premises are involved in preparing, storing, distributing, and selling food products.

3. Hawkers sell packaged or freshly prepared food by traveling from one location to another.

4. Dairy Units, including Milk Chilling Units, Petty Milkmen, and Milk Vendors

5. Slaughtering house

6. Fish Processing, Meat Processing, and unit

7. All Food Manufacturing units that include Repacking food

8. Vegetable Oil Processing Units

9. Proprietary food and Novel food

10. Cold/refrigerated storage facility

11. Transporter of food products having several specialized vehicles like insulated refrigerated vans/wagons, milk tankers, food wagons, food trucks, etc

12. Wholesalers, suppliers, distributors, and marketers of food products

13. Hotels, Restaurants, and Bars

14. Canteens and Cafeteria, including mid-day meal canteens

15. Food Vending Agencies and Caterers

16. Dhaba, PG provides food, a Banquet hall with food catering arrangements, Home Based Canteen, and Food stalls at fairs or religious institutions.

17. Importers and Exporters of food items and food ingredients

Validity of FSSAI License/Registration

The FSSAI License / Registration will be issued for 1 to 5 years, as chosen by the Food Business Operator, from the date of issue of registration or license. The FBO must apply for renewal 30 days before the expiry of the current request.

Renewal of FSSAI

In India, FSSAI enrolment or Food License is crucial for every food organization prior to launching the food business. It is also important to renew the FSSAI License within the time-frame or before it lapses.

The food permit enables the food business administrator a 1-year validity or as long as 5-years. FSSAI enlistment charges change according to the residency of the FSSAI License. According to the FSSAI rules, every food business administrator needs to apply for FSSAI renewal 30 days before the expiry of the present food permit. Punishment on FSSAI License Renewal: If the application for the FSSAI License (State and Central) renewal isn't submitted within the specified time, at that point Rs. 100 every day would be fined for FSSAI Licenses.

Procedure to Apply for FSSAI License and Registration

Step1: The Food Business Operator (FBO) needs to access the official webpage of the Food Safety and Compliance System (FoSCoS) and click on the signup option from the homepage at the top right corner of the portal.

Step2: By clicking on signup, the FOB will be redirected to the signup page; provide all details, such as Name, Email ID, Mobile Number, Login ID, and Password, and click on the “Signup” button.

Step3: A verification code will be sent to the registered mail and mobile number. Furnish that verification code in the provided box and click on the “Submit” option to verify the details.

Step4: After successfully signing up, the FOB can enter the portal by entering the username and password.
